Cool Web3 Opportunities + Blockchain 101: Understanding Layer 0 and Layer 1— Issue 011
Hello, amazing person,
Glory Praise, here again, your paddy in this web3 space. Last week, I kicked off a new series on all things blockchain! This week, we’re diving into Layer 0 and Layer 1 blockchains. Plus, I’ve added a new section with opportunities for both newbies and experienced Web3 enthusiasts. Let’s get started!
🌱 What’s New?
Now, let's talk about the layers of the blockchain. Blockchain layers are the different levels of infrastructure that work together to enable the operation of a blockchain-based system. Each layer builds on top of the previous one, leveraging the infrastructure of the previous layer.
This week, we will be focusing on Layer 0 and Layer 1.
What is Layer 0?
Layer 0 is the foundation of the blockchain network. Think of it like the internet cables and routers that make up the backbone of the internet. It provides the underlying infrastructure that supports the entire blockchain ecosystem. Layer 0 connects different layer 1 blockchains, enabling them to communicate and interact. This layer ensures that blockchains can exchange information seamlessly, much like how different networks on the internet can interact with each other.
Examples of Layer 0:
Polkadot: Polkadot is designed to connect various blockchains, allowing them to transfer data and assets across chains smoothly.
Cosmos: Cosmos aims to create an "Internet of Blockchains," where different blockchains can interact and share data without issues.
What is Layer 1?
Layer 1 is the actual blockchain network itself. This is where the core operations of the blockchain take place, including transactions and the creation of new blocks. Layer 1 blockchains are the main blockchains that you might have heard of, like Bitcoin and Ethereum. These blockchains are responsible for maintaining the ledger and ensuring that transactions are secure and transparent.
Examples of Layer 1:
Bitcoin: Bitcoin is the first and most well-known blockchain, as well as a digital currency allowing for peer-to-peer transactions.
Ethereum: Ethereum goes beyond just transactions; it allows smart contracts to run on it, which are self-executing contracts with the terms directly written into code.
The next time you hear about Layer 0 or Layer 1 blockchains, I hope you get it!
Layer 0 is like the foundation, making sure everything is connected and can communicate, while Layer 1 is where the actual blockchain operations happen.
